Everything Is On The Line:
Coach says;
Don't Tell Me What You Can Do...Show Me What You Can Do.
Athlete says;
It's my Match...EVEN or ODD...It Doesn't Matter.
If It Is To Be...Then It's Up To Me.
Spectator says;
So tell me - is it true...they say there isn't nobody
better...OK 152, show us what you can DO!
Coach says, So GOD, our 152 is 30-2 and there 152 is
also 30-2.
This one will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Both Athletes are under the gun!
And they are both playin to win.
These two will set the night on FIRE!
The periods are 2 - 2 - 2 and if it's still tied, then
it's up to you to get the two...Keep your feet inbounds
and capture the two.
Then you can say thank you GOD for this opportunity, I
am Thankful...
YOUR DIMENSION OF GREATNESS!
No one can know the potential,
Of a life that is committed to win;
With courage - the challenge it faces,
To achieve great success in the end!
So, explore the Dimension of Greatness,
And believe that the world CAN be won;
By a mind that is fully committed,
KNOWING the task can be done!
It's time to celebrate and commemorate another season
gone by. The emphasis of today March 28th isn't just
about this day; It's about what you have done along the

Fans,
I'm excited
to see what the voters want for our school district.
I voted YES for our Students here in Elida, as I always
will!
The students are doing the right things in the
classrooms as well as on the Athletic field of battle.
Some just do it better than others, because they work
harder at it.
ATTITUDE is a vital key in life: "Champions
aren't made in the gym. Champions are made from
something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream,
a vision."
"One man practicing sportsmanship is better than a
hundred teaching it."
I practice this concept everyday so I can make a
difference in our students' lives. POSITIVE FORCE!
I want to see our community come together and build a
new High School for our Future Student Champions.
I'm still here at school working, doing what I love to
do with a few still here on campus.
I have vision not only in my eyes, but also in my
heart...PASSION
A new student enrolled today and I made him feel
important...They are all important, that's why we all
should have voted yes today and everyday.
Good Luck Elida...I stand beside YOU!
"We who coach have great influence on the lives of
all who come under our supervision. We must try to
prevent the pressures for winning scores from causing us
to swerve from moral principles."
Leadership is not a position, it's an ACTION...
Tomorrow I will lead 6 Elida Student-Athletes to the van
so they can make one more travel with fate to join up
with other local wrestlers to compete in the All-Star
Match.

Ryan,
Those before you have been great; (Darren Scott) Elida/ONU
graduate. Plus, a National Champion. YOU KNOW!
Those with you are great in their field.
We all send our very best, but thats not going to do
it...You must do your very best. "Mental Toughness Is
Essential To Success."
Championship Titles are achieved through M.T.
per Ryan, Well On My Way To Capture A Championship
Title.
Ryan, You have accomplish much in your 24 years of life,
but the best is yet to come.
We all want to see you capture the GOLD...While others
doubt your efforts and skill...You must prove to
everyone as well as to yourself that to be the best you
must beat the rest.
For Those That Stay, Will Be Champions!
It's all on paper now, just waiting to unfold to tell
the truth to all that cares...Your march has not been
alone, it has been with your Heavenly Father...God has
granted your request, and given you the strength and
courage to run this race...
This past weekend I witnessed a true champion with no
arms and no legs stand taller than any giant that I have
ever seen walk on this face of this earth. This Div. II
103 pounder by the name of Dustin Carter from Hillsboro
High School came into the State Championships with a
record of 39-2.
He won his first match: 40-2
Then he lost his next match in OT, lost that match by 2.
Then he lost his final match which finished his HS
career, see he also is a Senior. He dropped his head in
defeat, then took a glance up in the stands to capture
all that stood on their feet to give Carter a standing
ovation. He stood tall and put both stubs in the air to
signify VICTORY...It made be proud to see a young man
fight for something he loves...Wrestling he embraced, I
wish him well.
You see Ryan, it's all in the frame of mind
(ATTITUDE)...Take this ATTITUDE son and do with it as
you wish.
"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?
Those after you will also be great, because of your
cornerstone that you have set in place.
I hope that you enjoyed this little memorial that I left
for these strong young people.
Teamwork, nothing great was ever achieved with out it.

Fans,
I hope you find this email message a rewarding ONE!
Congratulations: Jason Hunlock, Shawn Brunk, Shane
Troyer, Nate Painter, Andrew Leis, Cody Green, Spencer
Ladd and Cody Wittkamp for your dedication.
Elida Bulldogs advance one to the 2008 Div. II State
Wrestling Championships.
Sr. 103 Jason Hunlock locked into a 4th place finish at
the District Championships to achieve a birth place to
the 2008 State Championships.
Jason Hunlock has a current season record of 38-4.
Jason's Career Record is currently a 104-42.
This part of the season seems to always leave a
bitter/sweet feeling to my emotions.
You travel with eight of your best athletes that have
achieved their goal to reach the next level. But, to get
only one out to the final step is a sad moment.
I'm so very proud of our student-athletes: Jason
Hunlock, Shawn Brunk, Shane Troyer, Nate Painter, Andrew
Leis, Cody Green, Spencer Ladd and Cody Wittkamp in
advancing.
Elida finished 16th out of 43 teams with a grand total
of 29.5 points.
Winning the first two at Districts will place you into
the Championship Semi-finals. But, you need that third
match to place you into the Championship finals. Winning
the first three is easier said than done.
If you lose your first match then you have to wrestle
your way back by winning the next 5 matches to get out
to State. This is a rough road to travel.
This is how it played out for the Bulldogs:
Hunlock, Brunk, Troyer, Leis, Green win their first
round.
Painter, Ladd, Wittkamp lost their first round match.
I will tell you that Cody Wittkamp isn't worthy of the
flagrant misconduct call that was determined against him
in his match against the Napoleon athlete. It's a sad
ending of a season to such a great athlete.
Painter lost his next match to end his season.
Hunlock, Brunk, Troyer, Green lost their second round,
to face a must wrestle back situation. They at this
point would have to win the next 3 matches to get out
for State. Ladd wins his 2nd round.
Hunlock, Brunk, Troyer, win there 3rd round match.
Green, Ladd lost their 3rd round match.
So now Elida has three remaining in the tournament.
Hunlock wins
his match, but Brunk and Troyer lost theirs.
The Dan Miram (Highland defaults against Hunlock), so
now Hunny is wrestling for 3rd Place against Cramer from
Oak Harbor which beats him again to finish at 4th Place.
Jason Hunlock is State Bound...Go Hunny...Win the first
two Jason.
I'm very proud of our athletes, they have covered a lot
of space since November 9th when the season first
started.
Out of 17 athletes only ONE remains to be seen. Jason,
we are all behind you. We wish you they very best at the
State Championships on Thursday, Friday, Saturday Feb.
28th, 29th and March 1st.
Moving from the Division II High School level to the
Division III College level world of wrestling. This was
the trade off I had when I left Fostoria, Oh. at 1:35pm
to arrive at DeCarlo Varsity Center University Heights,
Oh. Saturday afternoon.
Since Jason was done till finals at 6pm and my wife (Denni)
and my daughter (Angela) encouraged me to take the leap
of faith and travel two hours to John Carroll University
to make it in time to watch Ryan Bowers wrestle in the
OAC Finals. I made it in time to watch the entire field
of athletes wrestling in the finals.
The SPORT of WRESTLING has offered me so much even when
I didn't even wrestle at all three levels. Mr. Don
Diglia encouraged me to get involved with the Elida
Program back in 1990. Started coaching the Freshman
level in 1991. Was handed the Head Varsity position in
1992 and that's when the entire family got involved with
wrestling. One of the best things that happen to the
Bowers Family. Ryan got started in 1991 as a 3rd grader
which was a late start when some get started at the
kinder year.
He went out to Nationals in 1994 as a 4th grader with
Matt Dunahay (also an Elida 4yr. lettermen).
Ryan wrestled and Angela kept stats and followed Ryan
everywhere that she could. Angela loves the SPORT of
WRESTLING with a PASSION.
Ryan, also a 4 yr. lettermen, but never claimed a WBL
Title. He did achieve a 2 time Sectional Title and a
District Runner-up position. Coaching error on my part,
beating Troy Deering going into the 3rd period at Galion
Districts. I had him take top when we should of stayed
on our feet. Ryan was picking him apart on his feet at
the neutral position. Deering hit this junk move on us
twice which cost Ryan the match. I still blame myself
for that call, it gave Ryan a bad draw at State.
Ryan wrestled at 112, 119, 135 and 145 during High
School career. Who would figure he would end up at
Heidelberg and wrestle Hwt. 2008, 2007, 2006.
Last year 2007 he claimed a wildcard to get to the NCAA
Division III National Championships. Finishing 2nd at
the OAC's last year wasn't the plan, but the OAC coaches
thought that Ryan was worthy of a wildcard position.
watched Ryan achieve his ultimate goal yesterday by
winning the Championship Title Hwt. Match against #1
Seeded wrestler Derrick Bendau; Over-all: 9-0, OAC: 1-0
( John Carroll ) #5 in the Nation. #2 Seeded wrestler
Ryan Bowers; Over-all 27-5, OAC: 4-0 (Heidelberg) #8 in
the Nation. With a 29-5 record going into his Final OAC
career destiny wrestling match.
I'm so glad that my wife and daughter convinced me to
take the trip...I would of never forgiven myself if I
would of missed that crown of VICTORY for my son Ryan. I
really do admire my son for his dedication to this great
Sport. I often say this, Ryan my son is twice the
athlete I ever was when I played Football at Heidelberg.
Now I just watched him on National TV, channel 25
SPORTS.TIME OHIO. It was great to watch it again. Ron
Jackson came looking for me over at the MS where I've
been working since 10am. Denni called him and requested
that he track me down since I didn't have my cell. She
even tried to reach me by email. Thanks Ron for looking
out for me, I hope you watched it too.
Now, it's off to the NCAA Division III National
Championships in Cedar Rapids Iowa on March 7th/8th to
see him in action for the last time of his career. To
see him capture a National Championship Title would be
the next level and his dream come true. Denni, Angela,
Kaden and I will be there to watch it unfold.
Ryan's current season record: 30-5. Maybe after this
weekend this will place him as a 5th seeded wrestler at
Nationals. I'm also interested to see what this does for
his National ranking. Ryan possess a 3.85 GPA at the
Berg, and he will graduate in May.
Ryan's final match of the day went like this:
First Period: 0-0
Second Period: Bowers: 0 - 1 Bendau
Third Period: Bowers: 1 - 1 Bendau
Overtime: Bowers: 3 - 1 Bendau
Ryan was so excited when he earned the takedown to give
him the Hwt. title. He got to his feet and expressed
himself in celebration of Victory with excitement. I
love it when you see an athlete express Success in a
positive manner as he did. Needless to say, this was his
highlight of his career.
I had to share this with all of you.
Education, Sports and Children have been my life. I hope
that this email is a blessing for all of you. I love my
career at ELIDA!
Thanks,
Coach Bowers

Fans,
The 36th Annual Wrestling Banquet date has been changed
from Friday, March 14th to TBA due to the
Jr. High School State Championships on March 14th.
We couldn't go through our celebration without those
athletes and parents that have qualified for State.
Everything will remain the same, except for the date.
Help me to pass this along.
All the kids should have received their banquet
invitation to bring to their home base to inform their
parents. That document has to be returned with your
athlete having it in their possession on the date of the
banquet. The document has a number on the top right
corner which will count for something the day of the
banquet.
Art design for the H.S. WBL Tournament T-shirts has been
completed. Now I need sizes for our 17 athletes and
three stats.
Parents, if you would like to order any shirts for
yourself I will need those sizes. You will have to cover
the cost of your T-shirt's. The parent's assoc. will
take care of the athletes' expense.

2008 VISION 2009
My passion for our Elida kids grow stronger everyday,
there just isn't enough time to do it all.
I had all intentions on attending the Township Meeting
last night to listen in on the plans for the new High
School. But I finally left the High School after
practice at 6:45pm. I ran over to the Middle School to
pick up my gear and when I arrived I discovered the
parking spaces were packed.
I said there is a good turn out for the Township Hall
Meeting, but then I remembered that Bret had Youth
wrestling practice.
I did see that WLIO's van was parked out front...I
thought to myself I'll watch the news tonight at 11pm to
catch the news release.
As I understand there was an interview with a guy that
has voted no on the last Levy's that plans to vote yes
this time, good for him and Elida.
Superintendent Mr. Diglia and Board Member Mrs. Stocker
contacted me last week to ask if they could post a Levy
sign in our back yard. I told them yes, I hope the
voters all vote YES for the Elida Levy.
Back to the wrestling agenda. Wanted to remind you that
the Sectional Championships for the 2008 Northwestern
Division II are this Saturday Feb. 16th at Shawnee H.S.
Wrestling begins: 10:00am
Championships: 5:30pm
Hope to see you there to cheer on those ELIDA BULLDOGS:
103 Jason Hunlock
112: Void
119: Shawn Brunk
125: Shane Troyer
130: Nate Painter
135: Ronny Milam
140: Andrew Leis

152: Jeff Porter
160: Cody Green
171: Spencer Ladd
189: Cody Wittkamp
215: Carl Miller
285: Nate Haase
Top Four in each weight class will advance to the
District Championships on Feb. 22nd and 23rd. Not sure
about the schedule as of yet, TBA.
See you on the mat.

Hot Off The Mat:
Proven fact that THE ELIDA BULLDOGS TRAIN HARDER THAN
THE REST...
It's not a stroke of luck that this Wrestling Program
has achieved a status of ON THE MAP...CHAMPIONS ARE
MADE...CHAMPIONS TRAIN...AND NEVER COMPLAIN...THIS IS
T.E.A.M. #1
Positioning is key, stay in good position and good
things will happen...Moving into the Championships with
a WBL Record: 4-5 and a Overall Record: 12-13 is not
consistent with the way WE train...Never looking
back...Moving forward...Stay Focused...VISION.
With a Lean Mean Roster of only 17 Student-Athletes and
a nucleus of 13 men in the line-up out of 14 weight
classes, this is what I mean about DETERMINATION.
I TRUST my athletes...I believe in my athletes...WE
BREAK our athletes to prepare them for BATTLE...Our kids
are solid in the classroom and on the mat for the most
part...It's not an IDEAL TEAM, or a IDEAL world, but we
push for better results. It WORKS
Our TEAM has a variety of strengths and weaknesses in
it, am I always pleased with our practice sessions or
Meet results...NO!
Key is A T T I T U D E...Stay P O S I T I V E...Love
Each OTHER... R E S P E C T each Other...T R U S T each
Other...
When others doubt you, you have to stay strong, stay to
the course, believe in yourself...Don't sweat the small
stuff, because it's ALL small STUFF...Do the right
things and the rest will take care of it's own.
This week I spoke about many things to our kids, I told
them that it's all a TEST. It's about TIME TO SHOW
EVERYONE IN OUR DISTRICT, COMMUNITY and LEAGUE who is
the BEST...TIME and FAITH was our CODE.
Saturday evening before the Finals we came together,
Coach Diglia expressed the topic about IT'S TIME
NOW...IT'S ALL ABOUT TIME, QUALITY TIME, TIMING IS
EVERYTHING. IT'S TIME THAT WE SHOW THEM...I expressed to
them to suck it up, be a CLASS of CHAMPIONS...No one
Trains for 2nd and no one remembers 3rd. Wear your
colors PROUD and leave everything on the MAT.
We brought it together again after our showers and I
discussed a TOPIC OF HEAVEN...I told them that GOD has
departments in HEAVEN and many ANGELS working in them. I
also informed them that there is one department that
only has one angel in this room that just sits there
doing nothing and it's sad to see that this angel not
working...But, there is a reason for this. It's the
THANK YOU department...We are always asking God for
favor and never thanking him for his blessings...
I told the boys that I was about to put this angel in
the over worked mode...I thanked GOD for OUR school,
sport, health, skills, family, supporters, teachers,
coaches, student athletes, world, season's, lives,
soldiers, leaders, friends, teammates, parents, fans,
JESUS.
Then we bent to our right knee and Shane Troyer took us
closer to HEAVEN in prayer...Then we stood up and placed
our right hand in the center and I told them that I
loved them as I often do...
I ended by saying lets break it out on three; one, two,
three YOU K N O W!!!!!!!!!

Fans,
Champions are made during the off-season. I once
designed a T-shirt and the printed statement on the back
of the shirt was.
There Is No OFF SEASON...
My Mother (Helen Bowers) often suggested to me to
concentrate on one Sport. My response was, Mom I love
all four season's. I want to enter College as a three
sport athlete and achieve a good education. My goals
were not always focused on academics. I also reminded
her that the reason why I didn't get a High School class
ring was everyone got one. I didn't want to stay in
Uhrichsville, Oh. I wanted to experience and take on
more challenges.
I told her that I would get a College class ring to
landmark a special part in my life. To achieve an
Education with a Sports background.
You see I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it,
no matter what the odds were...Neither one of my Parents
graduated from High School, I wanted to make my folks
proud.
You see I wasn't a gifted athlete at all, I had to train
extremely hard and I had to study more than
others...But, I was OK with that...There was only one
semester that I sustained a A-B average, I should of put
more emphasis on my education.
My ATTITUDE was key, my drive and determination were
helpful to me so I could remain confident in myself.
I was no different from my classmates/teammates other
than being a little slower. See, my Mother sheltered me
because I was her only child. I didn't get out much with
kids of my own age early in my life. That slowed the
process of growing with experience somewhat.
But, Athletics took me beyond that barrier...I hate to
see our Youth being so lazy...Gifted athletes with pour
attitudes.
For example, Pre-season conditioning for Track but still
playing Club Soccer. Student A says I'm not all for this
I have a game today...Coach says what season are we
in...Student replies Track.
Coach reminds this student that our training isn't that
demanding, because I'm doing the workout also...It's all
in the frame of mind and ATTITUDE...Make the best of it,
train with INTENSITY so you can maximize from your
efforts...Coach reminds this student that you made it to
STATE your Freshman year. Don't you want to repeat that
again this time and make your mark? Don't just settle
for getting there; get yourself in that upper class.
It's all about ATTITUDE.
I wrote this so you can share this with your
students/athletes/children.
I work long
hours and I get up early so I can help our Elida
Students achieve their goals...My weakness is that I
care too much...Others don't care enough...Our Elida
Students do matter and they are W.O.R.T.H. all our
efforts...Put forth your best effort for the Students
that they achieve their EDUCATION here at Elida. With
our support and dedication in them they will be
motivated to work harder...Remain POSITIVE always and
they will be POSITIVE...
Last night after wrestling practice I had a
Football/Wrestling Parent approach me in the locker
room. This Parent handed me a document and said the kids
love and respect you, we want you to have this so you
can put this into your program...Not even one of my H.S.
Parents, this was a M.S. Parent.
It's all about the kids, whether their yours or someone
else's. I respect them all.
I hope and pray that the voters do the right thing for
the Elida student's come March. When I drove up to the
new Van Wert High School I couldn't believe my eyes.
It's so beautiful on the outside, needless to say the
inside of the building would motivate the dead. I would
be so proud to work in that atmosphere; I'll bet the
kids are proud of their new school. Their wrestling room
is top of the art, the weight room is attached. Vote Yes
Parent's.
Now let's talk just wrestling, WBL Wrestling
Championships:
At the seed meeting last night when the dust settled it
looked like this. Elida has some good draws:
My predictions were dead on, except for one, I missed by
one.
103: Jason Hunlock 1st Seed, no brainer there.
He's four matches away from a 100th career win.
119: Shawn Brunk 2nd Seed, two other schools
challenged. Shawn set the stage; all I had to do was
elaborate with a fine tuning fork.
125: Shane Troyer settled in at a 1st Seed, just
with a short discussion for him to hold on to his spot
was all that was needed.
130: Nate Painter is an alternate; if someone
doesn't make weight then he'll get seeded.
140: Andrew Leis has a good draw at the 4th seed
position. He'll advance with a bye, then faces off
against Ginter (St. Marys) which Andrew pinned several
weeks ago. Then Andrew looks in from the outside at a
Battle either against Wally McGinnis (Bath) which beat
Leis by 3. Or, Clay Reohrig (Defiance) where Andrew beat
him by a major. So, instead of challenging for a 3rd
seed birth, I just sat there and waited. One thing
remains certain, you have to wrestle and beat people,
seed or no seeds.
160: Cody Green has beat Knous (St. Mary's), and
Long (Wapak). He's also beat Yarnell (Defiance), but
Cody has not seen Chandler (Bath), Hirschy (VWert),
Braun (Celina) or Recker (OG).
171: Spencer Ladd; wow it was a race for 2nd
seed. Van Wert tried to jump through the hoops with
Noggle, which Spencer beat 11-7. Then St. Mary's wanted
that seat also, Lauth was out that night with sickness
when we were at St. Marys. The nail that sealed it for
Spencer was when I asked St. Mary's coach who did Lauth
loss to. When he said Noggle VW, I just reminded
everyone that we beat Noggle. Good job Spencer.
189: Cody Wittkamp; when I saw Witt at 3rd seed I
glanced at his records, they were incorrect. I just
mentioned that his WBL record is 9-0, not 8-2 and his
overall record is 31-2, not 32-8. So, we were challenged
by Celina and Van Wert. Cody was at 215 earlier in the
season because we had Trevor Leis in at 189. I just
touched lightly on his record and his Tournament results
and ended it with (he's the real macoy).
I hope that we can back it up!
Side note on the WBL Championships:
Wrestling begins at 11am
Championships start at 6:30pm.
Middle School District Qualifiers will compete on:
Date: Sunday Feb. 17th
Place: Bowling Green
Time: Check in with Coach Overholt or search the web.
Heidelberg traveled to Wilmington this past Tuesday to
achieve another VICTORY...When the 285 pound class was
ready to roll Heidelberg has established a BIG lead.
With 8 wins and one loss and one match remaining...Ryan
Bowers looked small against this BIG Freshman...Sick and
all Ryan managed to win 2-1 and established a 27-5
current record...Heidelberg will be at Muskingum College
next Tuesday...OAC's are Feb. 23rd in Cleveland...Bowers
will have to win OAC's to claim a National birth.
Good luck to everyone.
See you on the mat.

Wrestling Fans,
After the Middle School Tournament finished up on
Saturday early evening. We put all our efforts together
and setup for the Youth Tournament for Sunday.
The spacers that Coach Blymyer put together for the East
end of the Fieldhouse was a perfect fit. The spacers
looked as if they were made by a professional business.
Blymyer is a very gifted person and his management
skills for the Youth Level as well as a Tourn. Manager
is first class.
The Fieldhouse looked great on both days, I'm so proud
of our programs. It's a sight to see, four mats down and
wrestling off the charts.
Clean-up was such an easy task this year, we had a big
list of people pitching in to help.
The Youth Tournament had about 407 athletes in action on
Sunday. It was a fun time in the FH over the weekend.
Great job, well done.
Thanks everyone for making these two events go so
smooth.

Congratulations to the Middle School Program for their
undefeated season. Elida Middle School finished in
SECOND Place in the 26th Annual Elida MS Tournament.
A BIG thank you to everyone that engaged into this
tournament, it takes a lot of work to setup and run this

Manager. Sarah Kipp did a great job taking care of all
the injuries. Great job Parents Association.
I have to congratulate the M.S. Coaching Staff for a job
well done. Coach Overholt, Coach Crates, Coach Harmon. I
know that the end results didn't settle well, I also
know that the finish was un-welcomed. What the MS Staff
has established has been a great dynamic effort. The
rest is up to the ATHLETES.
I invited the MS athletes to attend our practice

Fans,
Congratulations to the Elida Wrestling Bulldogs, they
chalked up another W in the win column.
Final Score: EHS 48 - 31 St. Marys

Speaking with Head Coach Larry Gruber last night before
the match was an interesting conversation. He shared
with me that his line-up was not at its best due to
sickness (Flu Bug). His best kid was out of the line-up,
Junior 171 Lauth. That gave us the key to move our
line-up around. We sent Freshman Austin Dysert out to
take the forfeit, then bumped Spencer Ladd up to 189 and
Cody Wittkamp up to 215.
Coach Gruber has 40 years in Education and 37 wrestling
seasons under his wings...He spoke about their new High
School that they will be moving into...He says that he's
not sure if he will go another year...I said what would
you miss most of all if you didn't come back, he said
the kids...My remark was then you need to keep going
then...It's all about the kids in my book.

I have to make a public apology to Jason Hunlock. I made
a big mistake by looking at the Team points column and
thinking it was the Takedown column. Jason Adcock still
holds the current 1998 record of 175 Takedowns...Jason
is at 129...He can still achieve
that record mark...Go get it Jason!

Orange/Black
Pack,
The difference between now and Feb. 9th is 20 days to
prepare for battle at the League Championships at Van
Wert's New High School.
WRESTLING... THE SPORT OF A WARRIOR!
Do you really know what the sport of
Wrestling is about?
It's about giving your blood, and sweat. It's to be a
warrior, to do battle and prepare for battle at all
times. It's the greatest test of Character out there.
Going out on the mat and giving your all in what you
have been trained against another individual who has
worked just as hard as you. It's to test the Heart, who
wants it more and who would sacrifice for it. Are you
going to give in or are you going to keep focused on
your Dream of being a CHAMPION? It's the ultimate
test of Pride.
Friday night Jason Hunlock, Nate Haase, Ronny Milam,
Nate Sackinger, Cody Wittkamp joined Coach Wittkamp and
myself to attend the Bergs match in Tiffin, Oh. After
practice we took off to watch Heidelberg host ONU in a
Dual wrestling match. Heidelberg won 8 of 10 matches,
Berg only gave up 6 points that night...Two negative
decisions...
Thanks Rene for scheduling the school van to travel to
Tiffin.
As I witnessed Heidelberg wrestlers walk in Seiberling
from the cold, I noticed Ryan Bowers enter the doors
last. It was a sight to behold to see your son walking
by himself, wearing the teams warm-up uniform. At that
moment I saw a young man, age 24 arrive to the drop zone
going in the same direction as his teammates.
I noticed a peaceful warrior getting ready to test his
Character again. He is the man I wished that he would
become...What parents instill into their children at a
young age does manifest...We are products of our
environment...He's on the Deans List at Heidelberg, as
my daughter Angela was also at Findlay University.
One thing is for sure, I never scaled may name on the
Deans List while I played Football and ran Track all
four season's at the Berg. Ryan is twice the
athlete I ever was, I'm so very proud of both my
children for what they have become...There is more to
achieve.
Berg is ranked 6th in the Nation at Division III
At the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls
last weekend Berg beats no. 19 Cornell College 30-13 in
the first round, the men fell in the quarterfinals to
the no. 3 University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 24-12. Berg
wrestled back, defeating ONU 32-15, no. 7 Coe College
21-18, and no. 5 Luther College 25-14 in the finals to
take 5th. This is without Boomer Fechko, Aaron and Dan
Jonhenry in the line-up due to injury. When they get
these 3 guys back it will be a great chase for
Heidelberg. Boomer Fechko (133) is ranked 10th,
Nick Sanchez (141) ninth, Joe Pflug (157) second, Ryan
Fogliano (197) fifth, and Ryan Bowers (285) at eighth.
Berg can win OAC's and advance at least 8-6 to
Nationals...Time will tell...No Time To Waste.
This is the direction that Elida works hard to model
after...If you would enter St. Ed. practice room you
would be amazed...Coach Wittkamp discribes it like
this...60 plus athletes in one battle zone fighting for
a position for a Varsity, JV, Green, Yellow and Freshman
level spot...The atmosphere is filled with high energy
and athletes treating their workout partners on the mat
like it's business. The kids are very physical to each
other while they are on the mats...On their outs, Jim
says their friends talking to each other with
respect...Back on the mat again it's a war zone.
Jim says it's something to witness...And they say St.
Ed. is down this year...We will see.
This is the atmosphere that I would like to see our
Elida kids develop. It will take a lot of Heart to
engage this...
Thanks to TV 44 Andy Lynch and Chris for the interview
on Senior Jason Hunlock. It was a great cover story and
most deserving for Jason Hunlock which I so admire.
Jason is a great person as well as a great
student-athlete...6 matches to win to reach his 100th
career win. Two this Tuesday, one next Tuesday, 2 on
Feb. 2nd, then his first W at the league championships
will enter him in that TOP Class Of Athletes...Great job
Jason, we are PROUD Of You!
Come watch the Bulldogs host Ottawa Glandorf and LCC
this Tuesday evening at 6pm in the Old Gym...We will
celebrate our Seniors: 103 Jason Hunlock:
28-2, 167 Takedowns (5 takedowns away from a season high
record held by Jason Adcock (172). Jason will
crush this long time held record. Jason is 68 TD's away
from tieing Jeremy Stemens career TD record
409. Can he do it? I think he can when he gets
10 per match in his next 7 outings before STATE. 171:
Spencer Ladd: Sophomre 135 lb. WBL Champion. Spencer
is standing at a current season record of 26-6.
On your feet is where you have to compete...If you can't
get it done there, then instead of stepping it up...then
you better STEP BACK .
Do the math...for every takedown that you complete you
out score your opponent 2 to 1. For example: 6 to 3, 12
to 6 or 12 to 5 if you keep him down. So, when your
behind in points and time is running out and you can't
score on top, plus there is no riding time in High
School. You have more takedowns than your opponent, you
don't have time to waist so you have to kick him in hope
to gain the lead or win the match. The first takedown
sets the tone of the match.
They do it at STATE...They do it at COLLEGE...
This is to help those that don't understand this concept
of kicking your opponent out...Why do you think they
made a new rule for the neutral position...After the
takedown you go out of bounds, instead of kicking him
out and wasting valuable time...You walk back to the
center of the mat and show the neutral position to the
official, and then he awards one point to your opponent
and you start on your feet again without wasting time.
So, before you get mad at your son's coach and before
you start using profanity during your conversation with
one of the coaches. You need to understand that it's the
way to tear down your son's opponent, even if he gets
beat 6-9...Take a look at Hunlock's takedown list...This
is for all you critics!
I have to thank and give credit where credit is
due...Jim Wittkamp is a wealth of knowledge when it
comes down to news about wrestlers in the area as well
as outside the area. Friday night I thought that his
phone was going to blow up with his interview with Mike
Maag. I don't even know a quarter of what he knows
outside of Elida wrestling news. Jim is amazing and he
is truely a TAZ-MASTER...Keep up the great work Coach
Wittkamp.
Jim also has spearheaded the Disney trip for the kids,
it looks like a go in June...We will have our home base
Camp on June 16, 17, 18, 19...Then some will
drive...some will fly to Florida for the National
placing through their wrestling skills...Some of our
kids have the goal to place down there and to be noticed
by Colleges...
Jim shared with me a couple of interesting stories on
Friday and Saturday. One doesn't surprise me at all
considering the source...the other one which Jim
wouldn't reveal to me the source. A parent challenged
one of the trip rules about tobacco...this parent
condones that their kid can use tobacco in the
summer...I hope that this parent was smart enough to
challenge that in a private discussion with Coach
Wittkamp...
For every choice there is a consequence in life
POSITIVE and NEGATIVE...Can you live with
that...I know that I can.
MATCH NIGHT AT ELIDA: Last Home Match 1/22/08, ( Senior
Night/Youth Night )...Match starts at 6:00pm in the OLD

Come on out and cheer on those BULLDOGS against O.G./L.C.C.

Elida's
winning streak was haulted against Defiance last night. Giving
up 30 points doesn't help matters at
all...When your upper level
athletes win by only a major decision, when they should
of pinned
their kid, hurts also...Coach Michael Diglia does a
great job with
our kids, he has worked them very hard to model the best
programs in the STATE...But, when you don't
have depth it's hard to
compete when kids are young, out of the line-up due to
injury,
sick...They H.S. program has grown because of Coach
Diglia's
experiance...Thanks Coach Diglia.
EHS: 32 - 39 Defiance
WBL
Record: 2-5
Over-all Record: 9-11
Dual Match looked like this:
130: S.Troyer pinned Carahan from DHS...We
bumped Troyer up from
125...Troyer stepped up and did what was expected.
135: N. Painter falls to a -Dec. 5-9
against Manon from DHS
140: A. Leis wins by a major decision 15-5
against Roehrig DHS
145: J. Porter gets pinned by DHS Waggenhauser
152: A. Jahnz gets pinned by DHS Miller
160: C. Green wins by a major decision 20-9
over DHS Yarnell
171: S. Ladd wins by a forfeit
189: C. Wittkamp wins by a forfeit
215: C. Miller lost to DHS Ward by a
decision 8-12
285: DHS Bachellor wins by a forfeit
103: Sr. Jason Hunlock wins by a pin over
DHS Jimmenez
112: DHS Miller wins by a forfeit
119: Match of the night: S. Brunk lost this
match by a decision 8-9 to
DHS Gonzalez...Shawn controled the entire tempo of this
match...Gonzalez stalled almost the entite match...but
Shawns 5
cautions hurt his birth right to
VICTORY...going into the the 4th period
it's tied at 7-7...Going into 5th period Gonzalez wins
the coin toss
and selects to defer...so Shawns selects down, doesn't
get
out...Gonzalez goes down...another caution on Shawn,
Gonzalez goes
up 8-7...we let him out escape 1...Gonzalez up by
two...Seconds in the match...stalling Gonzalez...penalty
point Brunk...Score
is 8-9...Time runs out...Shawn controls the entire match,
but lost the match by a decision.
125: DHS Hurst wins by forfeit since we
bumped Troyer to 130.
Can't give up the 6 point spreads...lose
small...win big...win the
nasty matches...We were clearly in far superior
condition shape
than Defiance...but we still lack that Mental Toughness
and
ATTITUDE, which a coach can't do anything about that
department.
Defiance had to present their athlete first to the head
table at
119...If Shawn would of waited for us to give him the
call to sit on that
match, give up the 6 points...That would of made it
32-36
DHS...I know Shawn would of won at the least by a major
and that would
of tied it up 36-36...But, I would say that he would of
pinned the
Hurst kid...What to do...NOW we have to work harder in
the
training room.
Coldwater: 43 - 33 Defiance
Elida: 39 - 24 Coldwater
Over-all Record: 10-11
Kids
stepped up against Coldwater from last Saturdays Dual
Tournament where Coldwater beat us by 20 points that
last round. To
beat Coldwater by 15 points was BIG...Out
of our 6 Pins for the night
we get 4 pins against Coldwater...Jason
Hunlock picks
Grandstaff apart on his feet with a final-score of
14-9...We bumped Jason
up from 103 to battle at 112...Jason lost to Grandstaff
last
week...Great Job Jason...Look for Jason on
TV44 tonight at 10pm. Elida
will host OG and LCC next Tuesday Jan. 22nd at
Senior
Night, we will host all the YOUTH Level
Wrestlers that Night free
admission for our youth...It should be a BIG night for
the BULLDOG
GRAPPLERS...Thanks
to Mrs. Fried for the TEAM introduction and
also to Heidi Fried
for singing of the National Anthum...Great job
ladies...Thanks
to Lima News for their cover story in the
newspaper...Youth Level wrestlers will be at Lima Bath
this Sunday. Middle School Wrestlers still remain undefeated and they will have a
very busy schedule next week...Monday Jan. 21st they
will battle
at the St. Marys Tournament...Wednesday they will travel
to
Bath...Saturday they will travel to Napoleon to compete
in that
Tournament...Good Luck to this quality TEAM of 7th/8th
Graders...This is one special group of athletes, I look
forward to the future
of EHS Wrestling.
Good
Luck To The Berg Grapplers, they will host ONU this Friday night
at 7:30pm...Next Tuesday they host John Carroll...Then
they travel
to Illinois to compete in the Pete Wilson Tournament on
Jan. 25th,
26th...Then host Ashland on Jan. 29th, while we will be
at St. Marys
that same night...I will miss two of Ryans Home Matches, good
luck to you Ryan...SUCCESS is yours if you
work for IT...IF YOU
WANT TO FINISH FIRST, YOU FIRST HAVE TO FINISH!

Trip: Coach
Wittkamp needs your registration forms, for your
athlete. There
is a deadline and we need to move on this
venue because if we
have too many voids then it will be a hopeless attempt
and Elida
will not engage a team. The athletes commitment needs to
be a
priority. This is one area that can help improve Elida's
Wrestling Program in going head to head against the best
athletes in the
nation. I hope that it doesn't end up being wasted time
spent and
time lost to improve our program because of lack of
interest on
Parent's/Athlete's end of it.

Thurs. Jan.
17th. I want to make a public apology to TV 44 for not
calling in the

bad in the public eye. A big
thanks to all the fans that came out to support us last
night.

Fans/Parent's,
Parent's Meeting:
*Jan. 14th
*Time: 7:00pm
*Place: H.S. cafeteria
We need you there, if you build it, they will come...We
can't do it without YOU!
The 26th Annual EMS Wrestling Invitational is
fast approaching.
Set-up will be on Friday Feb. 1st around 6pm
Normally the bulk of the set-up is done by myself and HS
athletes and those that show up to assist in the set-up.
Most of the small stuff I will have over in the FH
custodial room earlier that week. The MS mats will
have to be transported from the MS to the FH that Friday
night. We will have four mats on the floor to begin the
tournament. I will ask that the MS Coach Staff take care
of transporting the mats from the MS to the FH.
But, one major concern is timing between the custodian
staff and the arrival of the mats, etc. which goes on
the floor. We can't put anything down on the floor till
the tarps are down. One nice thing is that there
is not a home Basketball game that night. So we can
start setting up after the Girls BB practice.
Normally I'm breaking down all the tables and chairs in
the BDI and cafeteria while Mike is running practice.
Then with Jodi's trailer I transport tables and chairs
to the FH front entrance way.
Total: Chair/Tables
Tables: 34 tables, Chairs: 104chairs
Upstairs:22 Tables upstairs on the Southside for
concessions and head tables for Sunday. 56 Chairs for
all the tables upstairs
Downstairs: Tables: 12, Chairs: 48, | | |
